Why Our Animals Are 100% Grass Fed

At Dennings Down, our cattle and sheep are raised on pasture for their whole lives. This means they eat grass and forage grown here on the farm rather than grain or concentrated feeds.

Grass is what these animals are naturally adapted to eat. When animals graze pasture, they move through the fields as part of the wider cycle of the land. Their grazing helps stimulate new grass growth, their manure returns nutrients to the soil, and the pasture itself develops stronger roots over time.

Healthy pasture supports more than just livestock. It creates space for wildflowers, insects and birds, and helps the soil hold water and store carbon. Looking after the grass is really about looking after the whole system.

For us, keeping animals 100% grass fed is part of keeping the farm simple and working with the landscape we have. It’s also why our beef and lamb are certified Pasture for Life, meaning the animals are raised entirely on grass and conserved forage.

It’s a slower way of farming, but it’s one that feels right for the land and the animals.
